Contemporary theatre, in all its many forms, relies heavily on dramaturgy as a fundamental and essential element. The term itself originally referred to a comprehensive theory of "play making" and has evolved to play a crucial role in various narrative forms and structures, including opera, performance art, dance, multimedia, filmmaking, and robotics. Its evolution has been driven by our global, mediated context, which has led to multinational group collaborations that blur traditional role divisions and bend time and space constraints. In this context, the dramaturg serves as the ultimate globalist, with responsibilities ranging from intercultural mediation to information and research management, media content analysis, interdisciplinary negotiation, and social media strategy. This collection focuses on contemporary dramaturgical practice, featuring contributions from both academics and prominent working dramaturgs. This approach ensures a deep engagement with current issues in dramaturgy, including the impact of social media and the ongoing importance of interdisciplinary and intermedial processes. The contributions are organized into eight main lenses: world dramaturgy and global perspectives; dramaturgy as function, verb, and skill; dramaturgical leadership and season planning; production dramaturgy in translation; adaptation and new play development; interdisciplinary dramaturgy; play analysis in postdramatic and new media dramaturgy; and social media and audience outreach. The author, Magda Romanska, holds the position of Visiting Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, Associate Professor of Theatre and Dramaturgy at Emerson College, and Dramaturg for Boston Lyric Opera. Her publications include "The Post-Traumatic Theatre of Grotowski and Kantor" (2012), "Boguslaw Schaeffer: An Anthology" (2012), and "Comedy: An Anthology of Theory and Criticism" (2014).
